Steven Gabolinscy

A dedicated conservationist seeking to contribute to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices to protect the unique sights and sounds of our country.

I have always had a love for New Zealand’s unique ecosystems since I was young, I thought it would be only a dream that I could become as involved with protecting it to the degree I am now.

Starting in Okoheriki, a few years working with Rotorua Canopy Tours & Canopy Conservation Trust, then branching out into Kaharoa, Whirinaki and other forests around primarily the Bay of Plenty. I have had the pleasure of learning from mentors such as Graeme Young and Carmel Richardson of Kaharoa Kokako Trust who, among others, have been a massive source of inspiration.

As a graduate of the BCA (Bay Conservation Alliance) Cadetship, I have been able to learn from some of the best professionals and community leaders in the conservation space, such as John Bissell and Pa Ropata (Rob McGowan). A massive thank you will always go out to the passionate tutors of BCA. I have been inspired to take conservation into my hands and make a relentless attempt to pursue the greatest good in this space.

Alongside Mitch during his BCA Cadetship we established Green Skies Landcare to make our dream a reality under our own agency.

A passionate advocate for our native flora & fauna. Prepared to do the physical work, also well equipped with the know-how for the digital side of things.

Starting my Conservation career as a Zipline Nature Guide a few months later than Steve, late 2023. I was able to rekindle my passionate wonder for the natural world. After acclimatising to the world of eco-tourism, I used all of my learnings from fellow guides to become a steward of our native ecosystem.

I’ve been fortunate to gain experience in all aspects, Trapping, Monitoring, Planting, Teaching, Learning, Planning, Reporting - on my own as well as part of a team.

A proud moment was being involved in a novel study around Carbon Sequestration in Native Forests with low pest populations, working with University of Canterbury. Another was taking groups of Youth around the forest to build their appreciation for their homeland.

With a background in IT, GIS & Asset Management, I am lending my previous experience and skillsets into a landscape where I find more purpose and reward.

Co-founding Green Skies Landcare with Steve has been an uplifting opportunity to commit myself fully to the restoration and preservation of what’s important here in Aotearoa. This is what truly gets me out of bed in the morning.
